AD2800 · potential detachment of the wheel
8 Jul 2015 · RPT/2015/002
A particular batch of Knott bearings wheel bearings are known to have a defective seal and these bearings are exhibiting premature failure in service with the possibility of total bearing collapse. Signs of failure include: excessive grease leakage into dust cap and onto drum face rumbling bearing when wheel is spun by hand and noticeable play in bearing when wheel is rocked by hand. If the above signs are ignored it is possible for the wheel and hub to detach and the stability of the trailer to be adversely affected.
Fix: The owners of the trailers will be alerted to the concern via a letter and also told to check for failure indicators daily until the bearings have been replaced with quality assured units.
