Which class does your vehicle need?

An MOT station is only approved for particular classes. Most garages do class 4 (cars, vans up to 3,000kg, minibuses with up to 12 seats). Motorcycles need a class 1 or 2 station, and vans between 3,000kg and 3,500kg gross weight need class 7. Turn up at the wrong one and they can’t test you.

ClassWhat it covers
1Motorcycles up to 200cc
2Motorcycles over 200cc
3Three-wheelers up to 450kg
4Cars, vans and minibuses
5Larger minibuses and buses
7Goods vehicles 3,000 to 3,500kg

Where this list comes from

DVSA publishes the register of active MOT test stations on GOV.UK every 3 months under the Open Government Licence. This copy is the 26 Feb 2026 release. Coordinates for the distance search come from postcodes.io, using ONS postcode centroids, so a distance is to the postcode, give or take a couple of hundred metres.

Northern Ireland runs MOT testing through DVA test centres rather than private garages, so it isn’t in this list.
