How do I know if my car has been recalled?

Enter the registration. DVSA holds an outstanding-recall flag for each vehicle: Yes means at least one recall hasn't been done, No means all past recalls were fixed, Unknown means none on file. Below that we list every recall campaign published for the make and model, narrowed by build date where DVSA gives one.

Does a recall cost anything?

No. Safety recall work is done free by any franchised dealer for that make, however old the vehicle and whoever owns it now. Ring the dealer with the registration and the recall reference.

Can I still drive it?

Usually, unless the recall notice says otherwise. Recalls range from a software update to a risk of fire. Read the defect and remedy on the recall, and if it involves brakes, steering, fuel or airbags, get it booked in before anything else.

Why does the list show recalls that don't apply to my car?

The register describes affected vehicles by model and build window, sometimes by VIN range. We match on model name and build date; the vehicle-level flag from DVSA is the one that says whether yours is affected. If it says No and the list shows campaigns, those were fixed or never covered your VIN.

The register is DVSA’s, published at check-vehicle-recalls.service.gov.uk under the Open Government Licence. Manufacturer names are tidied (DVSA files Mercedes under several legal entities, for instance) but the recall text is verbatim.
