A design-related plastic rib that is too high leads to a collision between the wheel arch cover and the fender. Due to the excessively high plastic rib on the rear wheel arch cover of the front axle this may be installed with preload and thus some fastening points may not be fully engaged. As a consequence the engaged fastening points of the wheel arch cover may fracture and the wheel arch cover (931 mm x 652 mm x 70 mm approx. 1.81 kg) may completely detach from the vehicle and fall off due to the dynamic load during driving operation. This may increase the risk of accidents for other road users.
Fix: As part of the recall campaign the excessively high plastic rib must be shortened on the potentially affected vehicles.

As part of our ongoing quality monitoring we have determined that on Actros 963 and eActros 983 vehicles the rear wheel arch cover on the front axle could fall off. A design-related plastic rib that is too high leads to a collision between the wheel arch cover and the fender. Due to the excessively high plastic rib on the rear wheel arch cover of the front axle this may be installed with preload and thus some fastening points may not be fully engaged. As a consequence the engaged fastening points of the wheel arch cover may fracture and the wheel arch cover (931 mm x 652 mm x 70 mm approx. 1.81 kg) may completely detach from the vehicle and fall off due to the dynamic load during driving operation. As part of our continuous quality monitoring we have found that the leaf springs of the front axle could break on Actros 963 vehicles. The cause of the breakage may be edge corrosion due to insufficient descaling or surface defects during the rolling process. Each of the two fault profiles can cause a fracture independently of the other. The defective part analysis indicates that edge corrosion may result from scale residues not fully removed during the supplier's production run. Additionally the fault profile reveals that surface defects occurring during the rolling process—specifically near the edge—coincide with the initiation of breakage which is attributed to system malfunctions at the supplier's end. The progressive edge corrosion or the surface defects from the rolling process can lead to material fatigue in the affected area. Failure of the component or breakage at the heavily stressed points of the lower leaf spring could be the consequence. Partial component loss during driving operation cannot be ruled out. The size of a potentially lost leaf spring part depends on the individual fracture pattern. This can increase the risk of an accident.
Fix: In the scope of the recall campaign both leaf springs of the front axle must be replaced on the potentially affected vehicles as a precautionary measure.

As part of our continuous quality monitoring we have found that a thermal reaction may occur at the battery connection bolts of the electronically controlled power steering pump (EHPS (Electrohydraulic Power Steering)) of the trailing axle on vehicles of models eActros 983 and eEconic 956. The two battery connection points of the electronically controlled power steering pump of the trailing axle are located at the bottom in the installation position and are provided with a cover cap to protect against contact. Rain and splash water can collect in the cover cap. The water can no longer drain off due to missing drain holes. Because the battery connection points are standing in water electrochemical corrosion occurs that decomposes the bolts beyond the usual surface corrosion of the components. As a result of the corroded contact surface the transitional resistance at the terminal stud to the battery line increases and energy is released in the form of heat. Depending on the intensity and duration of the thermal reaction the battery lines and the circuit board of the electronically controlled power steering pump could ignite and in an unfavourable case flames could spread to surrounding components or the vehicle. This may increase the risk of fire. Failure of the electronically controlled power steering pump of the trailing axle has only minor effects on driving operation. There are only restrictions when reversing which however correspond to the operation of a non-steerable trailing axle. The turning circle could also be increased. However this is hardly noticeable to the driver.
Fix: As part of the recall campaign the electronically controlled power steering pump and the cover cap must be replaced on the affected vehicles.

As part of our continuous quality monitoring we have found that a thermal reaction may occur at the battery connection bolts of the electronically controlled power steering pump (EHPS (Electrohydraulic Power Steering)) of the trailing axle on vehicles of models eActros 983 and eEconic 956. The two battery connection points of the electronically controlled power steering pump of the trailing axle are located at the bottom in the installation position and are provided with a cover cap to protect against contact. Rain and splash water can collect in the cover cap. The water can no longer drain off due to missing drain holes. Because the battery connection points are standing in water electrochemical corrosion occurs that decomposes the bolts beyond the usual surface corrosion of the components. As a result of the corroded contact surface the transitional resistance at the terminal stud to the battery line increases and energy is released in the form of heat. Depending on the intensity and duration of the thermal reaction the battery lines and the circuit board of the electronically controlled power steering pump could ignite and in an unfavourable case flames could spread to surrounding components or the vehicle. This may increase the risk of fire. Failure of the electronically controlled power steering pump of the trailing axle has only minor effects on driving operation. There are only restrictions when reversing which however correspond to the operation of a non-steerable trailing axle. The turning circle could also be increased. However this is hardly noticeable to the driver.
Fix: As part of the recall campaign the electronically controlled power steering pump and the cover cap must be replaced on the affected vehicles.

The catch lugs of the cover caps attached to the profile seals of the side trim frame may may break unnoticed during assembly and the cap may therefore only be inserted loosely. If a cover cap is lost the profile seal might wander and be lost from the vehicle.
Fix: Replace the plugged-in cover caps with screwed-on cover caps

The offside service brake hose on the first axle may be incorrectly routed. This may result in a chafe condition. In extreme cases this may lead to premature hose failure and a reduction in front axle braking effort.
Fix: Inspect routing of the service brake hose at the offside of the front axle. Hose to be re-routed if found to be incorrectly sited. Replace any hose exhibiting chafing damage.
